1 The Universal Problem: Romans 3:23
All Have Sinned
- "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
- Romans 3:10: "There is none righteous, no, not one."
- No one can claim moral superiority. We have all missed the mark of God's holy standard.
- Sin is not just bad actions; it is rebellion against God that leaves us spiritually bankrupt.
🗣️ On the street, say it like this"If you and I stood on the coast of California and tried to jump to Hawaii, you might jump 15 feet and I might jump 10, but we both fall into the ocean. That's what falling short of God's glory means."
2 The Deadly Wage: Romans 6:23a
Wages of Sin
- "For the wages of sin is death..."
- A wage is what you earn by your work. What we have earned by our rebellion against a holy God is death: physical death and eternal separation from God in Hell.
- God is not cruel; He is paying the just wage that sin has earned.
🗣️ On the street, say it like this"When you work for an employer, you expect your wages on Friday. Before God, the wage we have earned by breaking His Law is death."
3 The Divine Gift: Romans 6:23b & Romans 5:8
The Gift of Grace
- "...but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
- Romans 5:8: "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
- God did not wait for us to clean ourselves up. Christ died for us when we were at our worst, and He rose again on the third day.
🗣️ On the street, say it like this"A wage is earned, but a gift is free! Jesus took the death penalty we earned, so God could offer us the gift of eternal life."
4 The Saving Response: Romans 10:9-10, 13
Confess & Believe
- Romans 10:9-10: "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
- Romans 10:13: "For 'whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.'"
- Real faith is two-fold: inward trust in the heart and outward confession of Jesus as Lord. It is not a magic formula; it flows from repentance and faith.
- The destination: "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1), and "There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1).
